Seollal is Korea's biggest traditional holiday. Families travel to their hometowns, so trains and motorways pack and many shops close for a few days. Visitors in hanbok often enter the palaces free, families share tteokguk — rice-cake soup that marks turning a year older — and folk villages host ancestral rites and traditional games.
