The ceremonial axis of the old city, this broad plaza runs from Gwanghwamun gate toward City Hall, watched over by statues of King Sejong — inventor of the Korean alphabet — and the naval hero Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Reopened in 2022 with fountains and greenery, it's a stage for rallies, festivals and a clear view back up to the palace and Bukaksan.
