Built by the Japanese colonial authorities in 1908, this red-brick prison held Korean independence activists until liberation in 1945. The preserved cell blocks, underground interrogation rooms and execution building are now a sober history museum — the basement keeps the cell of Yu Gwan-sun, the teenage independence martyr. It's a moving, essential counterpoint to the palaces.
