Korea has four distinct seasons, and the sweet spots are spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov), when the weather is mild and clear. Pack for the season — summers are hot and wet, winters genuinely cold.
Spring (Apr–May)
Mild and pleasant, with cherry blossom sweeping the country in early April. One of the two best times to visit.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Hot and humid, with the "jangma" monsoon rains from late June into July and the odd typhoon possible in August–September. Bring breathable clothes and an umbrella.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Crisp, sunny and dry, with spectacular autumn foliage — the locals' favourite season and arguably the best time to come.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Cold and dry with snow, and temperatures often below freezing. Dress in real layers — a warm coat, gloves and a hat — especially for evenings.
Best months
April–May and September–November give the kindest weather and the prettiest scenery, which also makes them the busiest. Book ahead.
Fine dust
Fine or yellow dust ("misemeonji") can settle over the country, mainly in spring. Check the air-quality index and wear a mask on bad days.
Fares, prices and rules can change over time — please check official sources before you travel.
